New ROV/survey ships combine speed and seakeeping

As offshore operators have focused more and more on subsea installations and on the use of seabed pipelines, so the need has grown for a new generation of support vessel able to inspect, maintain and, where necessary, repair subsea structures and pipelines, using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), rather than divers, to do so. Two new vessels that have recently joined the highly specialised pool of ships providing such services in the North Sea are Edda Fonn, owned by Ostensjo Rederi, and Seaway Petrel, owned by Uksnoy A/S, both Norwegian companies, each of which is designed and constructed to a high standard that marks them out as among the most technically sophisticated vessels of their type.
