A ker Brattvaag shipyard in Norway was due to deliver the first example of a unique, new class of subsea support ships, Island Frontier, by the end of October 2003. Designed to undertake a variety of tasks including subsea installation, ROV operations, diving support and supply work, the UT37L is the first to comply with DNV's rules for 'ship-shaped well intervention units,' and will be classed as a 'mobile offshore unit' under Norwegian Maritime Directorate regulations. As Nils Peter Pilskog, Sales Manager Ship Technology at Rolls-Royce Marine, who designed the vessel for shipowner Island Offshore explains, the UT737L builds on experience from more than 400 UT series offshore service vessels, and is a development of the Island Offshore's UT737 Normand Flower.
