The escort tug market is a relatively new branch of the towing industry but it is producing some of the more exciting tug designs to enter the market. This sector is also buoyant in terms of new contracts and so it is a valuable source of orders for several yards, as well as equipment manufacturers. The requirement for escort tugs was born out of concern for large ships carrying dangerous cargoes operating within the narrow confines of a harbour. With most of these large vessels operating with a single engine and rudder in the interests of economic operation, the concern came from the consequences of an engine or steering failure.
