Tug designers lead the world in the development of innovative propulsion systems. Long gone is the single-engined tug with a big rudder for control. The use of thrusters has completely changed the style and method of operation of tugs. First was the use of thrusters at the stern in the form of the ASD tug, and then moving the thrusters to the bow to create the tractor tug. The thrusters may be of the azimuthing type or the Voith type but the concept of using thrusters in tugs is now well established.
