Seattle company secures contract to build RoRo ferries

Washington State Ferries (WSF), part of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), has awarded a US$114 million contract to Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle to build two 64-car ferries. The vessels will be based on Island Home, a ferry currently operating in Massachusetts.rnThe announcement was made on 13 October 2009 and forms part of WSF's programme to replace its ageing fleet. According to WSDOT nine of the 20 vehicle-passenger ferries are between 40 and 65 years old and need to be replaced in the next 20 years.
