Risk of capsizal is a common problem faced by escort tugs which, thanks to the commercial pressures of ensuring quick turnaround times at port, can risk loss of control when operating at high speeds - particularly if they are conducting these operations in rough sea conditions, or are subjected to excessive propeller wake from the vessel they are attempting to escort. In response, Netherlands-based Mampaey Offshore Industries is attempting to provide tugs with enhanced stability, courtesy of its 'dynamic oval towing' (DOT) system.
