Sanmar going strong

With more than 4,200m~2 of land at its disposal, Istanbul-based Sanmar has carved out a reputation for itself as one of Europe's leading tug production facilities, with Robert Allan Ltd designs constituting a hefty part of the yard's output. According to Ali Gurun, Sanmar project director, the yard, which was rated Turkey's second largest ship exporter between 2009 and 2010, and which is ISO 9001 -certified, has pieced together more than 100 tugboats since the company's inception in 1976, and currently has 22 such vessels on order, effectively delivering "one tug every four months", Gurun comments, with international clients including Smit Lamnalco, Sovcomflot and Seaspan. Sanmar employs 72 members of personnel and 269 sub-contractors, meaning that 341 people are active at the site on a daily basis, and the yard is also able to rely on a nearby steel construction workshop with a capacity of more than 5,000m~2. In addition to vessel construction, Sanmar also handles harbour towage operations across a number of Turkish ports, including Nemrut Bay and Izmit Bay, amongst others.
