Remote communications provider Digigone is due to launch its new crew calling service, provisionally titled Crew Chat, which will enable seafarers to videoconfer-ence in real time with friends and family across the globe, at low cost and utilising a small amount of bandwidth. The service is intended to provide a more intimate means of communication with loved ones than is the case with voice-only crew calling services, and all within a private environment. Michael Dunleavy, Digigone president, tells Ship & Boat International that fleet operators adopting the solution could find the solution a major boost to crew loyalty and retention, and that the launch is timely given the recent passing of the ILO's Maritime Labour Convention 2006.
