The matrix of image points is divided into blocks (2) of image points; the blocks are classified into single color blocks contg. only blocks of one color, two-colour blocks contg. image points with a foreground color and image points with a background color and multicolor blocks contg. image points with many colours; the different block types are compressed using different methods.
