Unmanned surface vessels (USVs) played a key role at the Royal Navy's Unmanned Warrior '16 (UW16) exercise, which was hosted off the West Coast of Scotland in October. Specific focus was placed on the ability of USVs to perform mine counter measure (MCM) duties and anti-submarine warfare (ASW). Hosted by the Royal Navy, UW16 saw some 40 maritime autonomous systems from industry, academia and defence partners, who demonstrated their technologies within the Joint Warrior Operational Environment, focused on the UK Ministry of Defence's (MoD's) QinetiQ-operated ranges on the Hebrides and the British Underwater Test and Evaluation Centre (BUTEC) at the Kyle of Lochalsh.
