Located in New Brunswick, one of Eastern Canada's three famed Maritimes (or Maritime provinces), including Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, the small village of Bas-Caraquet is currently playing host to a resurgent boom in boatbuilding. Naturally, given its location in Atlantic-facing Canada, fishing and shipbuilding were once major industries in Bas-Caraquet. However, while the village still enjoys a reputation as a 'fishing town' and fishing and crabbing remain integral to the local culture, few of the area's yards managed to survive beyond the early 1980s - a period when economic pressures and outdated building methodologies forced the closure of a number of sites; not just in Canada, but across the UK and Europe too.
