BAE Systems has commenced work on the final unit of an order of five 'Batch 2' River-class offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) for the UK Royal Navy. Scheduled for delivery in 2019 and expected to enter service in 2021, HMS Spey was ordered by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) alongside four sister vessels, HMS Forth (due for delivery later this year), HMS Medway, HMS Trent and HMS Tamar. All vessels have been/are being constructed at BAE Systems' Govan and Scotstoun yards on the Clyde, the latter facility having been tasked with fitting out the OPVs.
