Anew Germany-based consortium is planning to commence its first live remote-controlled tug trials, following the successful conclusion of scaled-down model trials just before summer. The FernSAMS project - short for 'Ferngesteuerte Schlepper bei An-und Ablegemanoevern grosser Schiffe' (or 'Remote-control tugboat used during mooring and casting-off manoeuvres of big ships') - seeks to demonstrate the value of remote piloting as a booster for safety and efficiency during everyday tug duties.
