A research team at Purdue University, Indiana has completed and trialled a prototype of a new torpedo-shaped unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) specifically developed for noise-free, long-range research and survey missions within shallow waters, coastal areas and other confined-space environments where movement may be restricted. In development since 2012, the Research-Oriented Underwater Glider for Hands-On Investigative Engineering - or ROUGHIE for short - measures approximately 1.2m in length and is modular in design, permitting the user to swap out or add components and sensors to suit the mission at hand.
