"I'm forthright," says John Saladino, who has never been one to mince words. After 51 years in business, the interior designer-who divides his time between New York and Montecito, California-has certainly earned the right to tell it like it is. He pioneered a look that remains as fresh today as when he began creating it in the 1960s and 70s: a serene mix of classicism and modernism, with unexpected touches like industrial finishes and advanced technology. His furnishings-from his signature high-back sofas to the glass Saladino lamp, which Michael Kors has called the lighting equivalent of the little black dress-are contemporary icons. And he is as busy as ever. "We're working on projects from Saint-Tropez to Kuwait," he says.
