CMOS technology helps produce a better breed of image-sensing device that's smaller, less expensive, and less power hungry than some of the old standards. You can always spot a challenger. It's the new technology that promises to decrease cost, power consumption, and product size. An excellent example is the charge-coupled device, or CCD, which has all but replaced the vidicon tube. Because of its small size and lower power requirements, the CCD has enabled many new applications, from triangulation to machine vision.
