Another milestone on the road to molecular electronics was recently reached by researchers at Hewlett-Packard (Palo Alto, Calif.) and UCLA (Los Angeles). The researchers, who have received several patents for their work, are proposing the use of a simple grid of wires ― each wire just a few atoms wide ― connected by electronic switches a single molecule thick. "This is a technology that will really allow us to reinvent the integrated circuit at a molecular level," said Phil Kuekes, one of the inventors. "Molecular electronics is focusing not just on the interesting properties of molecules, but really attacking all of the problems of designing and building integrated circuits."
