Throughout the year there has been ongoing debate about whether the U.S. economy is slipping into recession, and how that might impact the global semiconductor industry. We still don't know if a recession will occur-economists usually make that pronouncement well after the fact - but we do know that the slowdown has taken a toll on capital spending in the semiconductor market. According to the most recent World Fab Forecast report from SEMI, equipment spending by fabs is expected to decline by about 20% in 2008 as companies are forced to postpone fab projects due to global economic uncertainties.
