The semiconductor industry is at a crossroads. At the leading edge, performance scaling is no longer solely dependent on feature size reduction; device designs are becoming increasingly exotic to cope with leakage and power issues. Circuit design costs are skyrocketing because design automation has not kept pace with the explosion in functions demanded by today's products. This is jeopardizing the viability of all but a few "home run" products.
