In recent articles, I have touched on the changing shape of naval platforms; changes that are as much a reflection of advances in technology as the changing nature of warfare itself. As the prospect of major naval engagements between nation states recedes, it has been replaced with asymmetric threats that demand different doctrine and tactics. Much of the strategy in current conflicts is predicated on the destruction of terrorist groups such as al-Qaida and others. However, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, their continued destruction is the genesis of their very existence and further expansion. Thus we are left with a strategy doomed to failure unless the root causes of the problem are addressed; a result well beyond a purely military solution.
