As the end of another year approaches and the festive seasons of many religions take place - Diwali, Eid, Christmas and the like - it is appropriate that we reflect on the people that keep our industry operating and moving forward successfully. That the physical operating environment is often harsh is well known to all seafarers but is it getting harsher? Environmentalists increasingly point to the dangers of global warming in terms of rising sea levels due to the melting of the polar ice caps, the increase of desert areas, and the risks of defoliating the rain forests, but to the seaman the effects seem to be rather more obvious.
