The father of modern ship management

Captain Charles Vanderperre was born in Antwerp, Belgium on the 25th March 1922. His father was a ship's master as were two of his uncles. Despite the loss of his father at the age of 12 when his ship sank, Captain Vanderperre said he never once considered doing anything else with his life than to go to sea. He was always extremely proud of his time at sea and indeed he made "reverence for the seafarer" one of his guiding principles when he later went into ship management. "Remember", he would say, "without our officers and our crews we in the office would not have our jobs." He would also remind us that our ability to run ships safely and efficiently for Owners depended first and foremost on the efforts of those onboard.
