Multipurpose terminal operator Ajwa fort Services is upbeat about future prospects after a record-breaking year for its facilities in Yanbu Commercial Port. Overall the company handled 2.48m. tonnes of cargo, 557% higher than the 1.6m tonnes recorded in 2011. Bulk barley exports were up by 64%, to 1,5m tonnes, as a result of more ships being directed to Yanbu by central government. Imports of steel pipes, billets and other metals were also significanfly higher as a result of local market demand. Overall Ajwa handled 125 vessels in Yanbu during 2012, compared with 80 the year before.
