Following decades in which global shipping steamed on, its technology course unchanged except for a progressive increase in ship size, the industry is in the midst of a paradigm shift which is transforming ship operations. The efficiency of maritime transport and its assets is on a steady upward curve. Rising fuel prices dealt a severe blow to shipping's system but the quest for greater sustainability and improved environmental performance are key catalysts in the drive to refine hull lines, validate new bow and stern arrangements, and adopt hybrid propulsion systems.
