Connectivity, new technologies and greater computer processing speeds have all contributed to a transformation in the way that ships' performance can be optimised, both at the design stage and later during operation. Entire bulbous bows have been swapped for newly-fabricated versions with improved flow characteristics thanks for computational fluid dynamics. In other cases, a twisted rudder or variable-pitch propeller has helped eke out that extra bit of fuel.
