A native of Pontotoc, Mississippi, Roger F. Wicker has been a U.S. senator since December 2007. In that time, he has championed a strong national defense. Mississippi is the home of major shipbuilding yards such as Huntington Ingalls and VT Halter Marine in Pascagoula. Wicker is chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation in the 116th Congress. He is the second-highest ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee and is a member of the committee's Seapower subcommittee. He also serves on the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Congressional Board of Visitors. He served in the U.S. Air Force and then the Air Force Reserve. He retired from the Reserve in 2004 as a lieutenant colonel.
