The event, held at Lions Gate Conference Center in McClellan, also served as an opportunity to highlight the council's adopted units and supported youth organizations. A trio of accomplished women shared their perspectives as to what is possible when barriers are removed, according to a report from council member Mike O'Docharty. Retired Navy Rear Adm. Bonnie B. Potter spoke on past challenges as a doctor whose career started in the 1970s and spanned three decades. She entered the arena of Navy medicine just as operational career opportunities were beginning to open to women. Integration into operational assignments was in its infancy, and Potter had to push the envelope to forge a new path. Her leadership helped transform policy and advance the integration of women into leadership positions. She attained many firsts as director of medical services aboard USNS Comfort during Operations Desert Shield/Storm, and as the first female physician in the military to be selected for flag rank. She continues to lead as president of the Navy League's Placer County Council.
