I grew up in a port town on Lake Michigan and developed an interest in ships. Looking at the Coast Guard's small boats as a youngster got me thinking that I wanted to build ships one day.rnInitially, I went into the Coast Guard Academy, then served on a ship and later pursued engineering duties for a while. Now, working on the National Security Cutter (NSC), I've gone from being on a ship and operating the ships to building ships, which is where I originally set out to go.
