If your automobile uses the Global Positioning System (GPS), or gets ticketed by a radar-toting policeman that you failed to see despite your laser eye surgery, you can thank the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). They are but a few of the scientific wonders initially developed by the Navy's 85-year-old corporate laboratory on the Potomac River. Others include the first operational sonar, the first detection of X-rays from the sun and the proposal to create a nuclear-powered submarine.
