DARPA's air-launched Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile-A (LRASM-A) is being adapted for vertical launch from surface ships. 1.The Navy has identified a need for a replacement for the Harpoon missile. 2.The Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile is being adapted for DARPA as a long-range cruise missile. 3.Navigation independent of Global Positioning System guidance is a requirement for striking targets in a high-threat environment. A ship-launched variant of an air-launched cruise missile in U.S. Air Force service is being eyed as a possible future cruise missile to arm Navy cruisers and destroyers.
