The growing challenge of balancing resources and tasking is forcing Navy and Marine Corps officials to consider the broader use of the Joint High-Speed Vessel, Mobile Landing Platform and Littoral Combat Ship, which now are entering the fleet.1.On top of the planned shift in focus to the Asia-Pacific region, the tasking challenge includes increased demand for naval forces in the Middle East and North Africa.2.The Naval Board has begun to look at the Maritime Prepositioning Force squadrons to see if they can do more than their traditional mission of bringing heavy equipment and supplies to a major amphibious or expeditionary operation.3.The cargo capacity and helicopter lift capabilities of the Joint High-Speed Vessel could support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions, and the large mission bay could facilitate theater security assistance training efforts.
