In Helmand Province in September 2011, I stepped on an improvised explosive device in the ground and was pretty badly injured from my neck up, and began a long road back to recovery. Thankfully, I had the opportunity to get involved in swimming. Swimming was a conduit to my recovery. Before I got hurt, I was a guy who could jump out of an aircraft at 25,000 feet, and dive down to 300 feet in the ocean, and do everything in between. And then, in a flash, an instant, I couldn't do anything. I was chained to a bed. That was a huge detriment to my confidence and my capability. But thankfully, through the sport of swimming, I had a conduit to get back. I had a way to gain back the confidence that I had [as] a naval special operator.
