The Navy's plan to lay up 11 Ticonderoga-class cruisers is intended to save money, but there will be an operational cost. 1. Typically, when a carrier goes on deployment, one cruiser and a number of destroyers will be part of the carrier strike group. 2. With 11 cruisers out of the fleet, the Navy still will have enough cruisers to follow the strike group plan, but it will need to pull some ships that would have been doing independent deployments and ballistic missile defense work. 3. That leaves the Navy with a fleet that is even more stretched out than it is today.
