New Books Discuss Guadalcanal, Marine Heroes, Anti-Access Warfare

The cover art of this book goes right to the crux of its subject of anti-access warfare: a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and its escort with raging infernos from enemy missile strikes. Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) warfare - denying an enemy the ability to operate "near, into, or within a contested region" - is a hot topic in an age where Chinese military power is ascendant and Iran apparently is developing a nuclear weapon. The author, a retired Navy captain schooled in strategy, discusses historical examples of A2/AD and details Germany's Fortress Europe, the Pacific strategy of Japan and the Argentine defense of its Falklands occupation. The author contends that high-technology weapons pose a great threat, but also can defeat such threats, and history shows that maritime capabilities are both survivable and essential in countering land powers.
