As lawmakers flee Washington for the month-long August recess, they are shelving - at least for the next several weeks - a simmering debate over defense dollars that threatens to thwart passage of a Pentagon spending measure before the start of the new fiscal year on Oct. 1. The House already has passed its fiscal 2016 defense appropriations bill, and Senate appropriators have approved their version of the spending measure. The bills include some big plus-ups for the military, including more F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and F-35 Lightning Ⅱ joint strike fighter jets than requested by the Pentagon.
