Germany, Israel Seal Corvette Deal

After several attempts, the German government reportedly has concluded a deal for the sale of four surface combatants (corvettes) to the Israel Navy. The sale is worth an estimated $1.2 billion, and includes about $137 million in subsidies from Germany, according to some reports. The four units will be based on the ThyssenKrupp Marine MEKO 100, essentially the same design that has been proposed on several occasions during the past several years with no deal being reached because of the lack of subsidies, most recently in July. With a contract now in place, construction is expected to begin by midyear.
