摘要

Gold Rush Port: The Maritime Archaeology of San Francisco's Waterfront is the latest offering from prodigious author James Delgado. Based on over thirty years of extensive fieldwork and thorough archival research, it relates the story of how San Francisco came to play a major role in global commerce. Tied to the sea in ways that few cities could expect to become, San Francisco grew from a sleepy outpost to a bustling entrepot all because of its maritime connections. By analyzing and interpreting the buried hulks associated with the Gold Rush of the mid-nineteenth century, Delgado is able to convincingly relay his argument that the rise of San Francisco was not "an accident attributed to the discovery of gold," but had been carefully planned and orchestrated by entrepreneurial merchants and farsighted visionaries.
