More Common Than We Think

A large fraction of Earth's population can be adversely affected by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, tornadoes, hurricanes, and floods. Many people fear the consequences of natural disasters, but few have even the most primitive appreciation of the risks. A student taking one of our natural hazards courses this year came up to the professor after a lecture and said, "We live on the Hayward fau I didn't know we are at risk."
