Current Status and Future of Tokai Reprocessing Plant

A wide variety of improvement measures have been put in place at the Tokai Reprocessing Plant since the March 1997 fire and explosion accident at the Bituminization Facility. As these improvements are now completed, equipment testing and operator training are currently being carried out with a view to restarting operation. Since reprocessing was suspended two years ago there have been a great many changes to the facilities and operating procedures, and so particular attention is being paid to ensuring that the operators are familiar with these.
