The Earth Simulator Project Opening up the 21st Century Science and Technology

The Earth Simulator (ES) was completed, after five years' development, at the end of February, 2002. The principal objective of developing the ES is to make a reliable prediction of global environmental changes such as global warming and the drain of water resources. The first few months were spent to bench mark tests to obtain such an unbelievably high performance as 35.86Tflops for Linpack (90% of the peak performance, 40Tflops) and 26.58Tflops for global atmospheric circulation simulation (65%). The machine itself has also been running very stably so far.
