Photovoltaic power generation is an example of clean energy that offers both a solution to environmental problems and stable supplies of resources and energy. For eight consecutive years, from 1999 to 2006, Japan captured the top spot in the world for production volume of photovoltaic power generation systems.rnThe oil shocks of the 1970s initiated full-scale technological development of photovoltaic power generation systems in Japan. The popularity of the technology got a major boost in 1992 when power companies introduced the "Excess Electricity Purchase Menu," which buys power generated by photovoltaic systems in conventional homes. A system of installation subsidies for homes that was implemented from 1994 to 2005 also contributed much to consolidating the market and expanding demand for photovoltaic power generation.
