COMETS Experiments Program

On February 10, a meeting of the Broadcasting and Satellite Forum was held at the Iikura Annex of the MPT, under the co-sponsorship of the MPT and the New ITU Association of Japan, Inc. This was the 237th meeting and the theme was COMETS (The Communications and Broadcasting Engineering Test Satellite), one of which was scheduled to be launched 11 days after the meeting. As new communications systems for the 21st century are already being developed, a new COMETS was scheduled to be launched to become a "bridge " toward the next century. As this launch on February 21 regretfully failed, we are presently investigating the causes of the failure and are preparing the next experiment to occupy a different earth orbit. The lecturer in the forum was Dr. Wakana, who is supervising the COMETS Project at the Kashima Space Research Center, Communications Research Laboratory (CRL), MPT.
