In the opening sentences of this aptly titled book, Terry Eagleton writes: "What if all the most familiar objections to Marx's work are mistaken? Or at least, if not totally wrongheaded, mostly so?" Noting that "you can tell that the capitalist system is in trouble when people start talking about capitalism," Eagleton seizes upon the opportunity offered by the current - and, it seems, abiding - economic crisis to call into question many truisms about the failures and inadequacies of Marxism that appear to have lost some of their self-evident truthfulness in recent years. Though not without its weaknesses, Eagleton's book is a useful primer, both for people taking Marxism seriously for the first time and for experienced leftists looking for new language in which to make familiar arguments.
