摘要

Historically, social movements (SMs) have often challenged the dominant modes of organizing technology and industry as well as the assumptions of associated scientific fields and research programmes. SMs have also served as incubators of new research fields and technologies that are, at least from the perspective of SM activists, more closely aligned with goals of general welfare and environmental sustainability than existing sciences and technologies (Jamison, 2001). Furthermore, SMs have broadened the horizon of scientific inquiry, often by drawing on local and lay knowledge as well as the embodied experiences of human difference, such as the experiences of patients, women, and marginalized ethnic groups and communities (Brown et al., 2004; Fischer, 2000; Kroll-Smith and Floyd, 1997). In short, the role of SMs in the development of science and technology has been both critical and generative.
