Scarry (1985) discussed the political consequences of pain's inexpressibility. Star (1991) used her allergy to onions to advance our understanding of the costs associated with interactions among individuals, organizations and standardized technologies. Gregg Mitman, in Breathing Space: How Allergies Shape Our Lives and Landscapes, offers a novel argument about the generative relationships between allergy and place in the United States: 'If place shaped illness, illness also shaped place', he writes (p. 39).
