SOLID WASTE PROBLEM IN KHULNA CITY, BANGLADESH : IT'S ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS AND SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT

Present paper enlightens the solid waste problem faced everyday by the residents in Khulna City Corporation of Bangladesh. The city people have been suffering from varieties of environmental problems, like sanitation and drainage congestion, air pollution, water logging, obnoxious odour, aesthetic problem, health hazard, pollution of soil and water bodies etc. due to unplanned solid waste (domestic sewage, industrial, clinical and hospital, etc.) disposal and management. The city dwellers expressed their concerns about the recent environmental problems they are facing everyday. Every environmental issue due to solid waste mismanagement is associated with a variety of problems, which has sociological, ecological economical and political implications. The present waste management system in Khulna city is not up to the desired level. To tackle these environmental problems public awareness about environmental impact of solid waste needs to be increased through the creation of institutional base and the people's participation. In fact, short to long-term community based programs and projects at government and non-government levels must be introduced and effectively be implemented immediately to address the environmental problems related to solid waste encompassing the idea and thoughts of all concerned people and agencies of the city. All the people must carry out their sincere responsibilities to ensure the healthy and safe environments for the future generation.
