He was born on July 03, 1948 at Shibpur, Howrah, West Bengal. After qualifying in the Higher Secondary examination from Shibpur, B. K. Paul Boys' School in 1964, he was admitted to the B.Sc. course with Physiology Honours at the Presidency College, Kolkata. Later he completed his M.Sc in Physiology from Calcutta University in 1969. Dr. Roychowdhury made a research study on animal model of toxicological effects of heavy metals on the reproductive system, under the supervision of Professor. Achintya Kumar Mukherjee of Presidency College and obtained Ph.D. degree from Calcutta University.
