The greatest mathematical genius produced in India in the modern times, Srinivasa Ramanujan made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions though he had almost no formal training in pure mathematics. In this article the life and work of Ramanujan have been discussed.
