Direct solid-state thermal to electrical energy conversion (thermoelectricity) technology has attracted tremendous attentions over the past 15 years. This renewed interest in the thermoelectric phenomena is fuelled by the necessity to develop renewable, cost effective and "clean" energy sources to address societal energy needs and to mitigate the environmental impacts associated with the fast growing world energy demand, decrease in fossil fuel supplies, and prospects of climate change arising from the consumption of fossil fuel.
