Clive s Column: Kits for beginners?

I am not entirely convinced that there is really such a thing as a beginner's kit,though I suppose it depends on whether you are talking about a ten year-old beginner or an adult beginner. Over the years, various manufacturers have tried to woo us with snap-together kits, starter kits (with glue and paints in the box) and now kits with pre-painted parts included. This in the face of so many so-called "collector's" models, impressively moulded and finished in both plastic and die-cast metal, aimed at people with too much disposable income who are presumably too lazy, too ham-fisted or too time-challenged to make their own more accurate and detailed versions. Why should people build kits at all when they can be bought already built and painted in presentation boxes? At a price, of course.
